You’re Moving to a New Location for a Job. Now What?
Employment for a company can occasionally lead to relocations, whether from the same company or when being hired for a new job away from your current location. During this process, it is imperative to understand the specific needs of you and your family as well as perfecting a negotiation for the expenses you’ll need covered. Before agreeing to any package, make sure to check each specific reimbursement with your employer beforehand.
Moving Services
Relocating is already stressful, but negotiating moving services into your relocation package can cut down on what you need to worry about during the process. Common moving services provided by relocation packages include: transferring your vehicles to a new location, sending a team to arrive at your residence to pack and transport your belongings, and having a team arrive at your home to help unpack your belongings.
Storage Services
When moving into a new residence, the bulk of your belongings may not initially fit into the home, or you may need to store certain items ahead of time. Certain storage services can be negotiated that allow companies to inventory your items, pack them into secure vaults, and transport the vaults themselves with all of your belongings untouched and safe. Some services can even allow you to store your belongings for several months to accommodate home renovations.
Temporary Housing
In certain circumstances, relocation may not provide enough time to find new permanent housing. Thankfully, some services provide temporary housing to accommodate you and your family until a suitable permanent housing situation is found. Temporary housing services can ensure that your new home is near schools, necessary stores, and your work while also providing move-in ready apartments with a single combined monthly bill.
Auto Transportation
One of the most common reimbursement services companies can provide is for the transportation of your car or to pay for the cost of renting moving vehicles. A company will also typically offer compensation if you have to travel to your new location by train or airplane and will pay for common travel expenses such as gas or rental car fees.
House Hunting Trip
If staying at temporary housing will not work for you or your family, a negotiation for having the company cover the costs of a house hunting trip can be arranged. Companies will cover the cost of transportation and hotels while you search for your new dream home. As an added reimbursement, most businesses will also cover the cost of selling your old home and purchasing a new home. This is given on a need by need basis depending on the needs of a family and what the company can afford. If the company can compensate you for the cost of home buying, it will typically cover everything from closing costs to real estate commissions.
