Moving is difficult enough as it is, but it can be even more difficult when you have a pet to care for during the move. Pets need attention and exercise, and it can be difficult to satisfy their needs during such a chaotic time. This can make them quite difficult. You also want to make sure that they enjoy their new home! Use these tips to help your pets throughout the moving process.
1. Remove your pet on moving day
Moving involves a lot of work, and you will not be able to get everything done at the pace you want if you have your pet wandering around the action. If you have a dog, take them for a long walk and maybe a trip to the park first, but keep your pet in a closed off room in the house or with a friend or kennel.
2. Get your pet ready for the crate
Whether you drive or fly with your pet, the pet needs to be in a crate at some point. It’s a good idea to get them comfortable with the crate before move day. Start by putting their food in their crate. Do this regularly. Start with the door open and then eventually close the door of the crate until they are done eating. On move day, you can put special toys and treats in the crate to make it even more appealing.
Give yourself extra time on the drive to allow for walks and other possible reasons to stop for your pet.
3. Stay positive
Animals are intuitive creatures. If you are stressed, your animals will feel that and become stressed as well. Maintain a positive attitude, especially around your pets. The transition will be stressful enough without you adding your emotions to the experience.
4. Be prepared
Most pets have a collar with your contact information. Be sure to update their tags just in case they escape when you get to the new house! You’ll also want to find a new veterinarian and pet store before you make a move.
Before you let your pet loose in your house, you’ll want to make sure the house is secure. Check that all windows have screens and there are no dangers to your pet.
5. Introduce the new home slowly
A new home can be very overwhelming for a pet. It’s best to start small and then expand. Introduce your pet to a specific room that has all of their favorite things first. They will be more likely to respond favorably surrounded by their food and toys. After they have grown accustomed to that room, feel free to let them explore more and more.
Moving with pets can make things a little more difficult, but you can use these tips to help your furry family members enjoy their new home as much as you do.
